Conditions - Central Nervous System - Dementia
Patrick Massey MD, PhD Integrative Medicine, ALT-MED Medical and Physical Therapy, Elk Grove Village IL and serving the Chicago area
Dementia is a broad classification for several medical condition that result in a loss of mental functioning. The most common dementia is Alzheimer's disease. However, dementia can occur for a number of reasons.
Dementia excluding Alzheimer's disease
- Mild Cognitive Impairment
- Vascular Dementia
- Mixed Dementia
- Dementia with Lewy Bodies
- Frontotemporal Dementia
- Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease
- Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus
- Huntington's Disease
- Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome
Many of these dementias increase the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease (except Creutz-Jakob and Huntington's disease). Unfortunately, all medications used for dementia are generally ineffective in the long term. Like with Alzheimer's disease, there is increasing evidence that super nutritious food¸ healthy activity, reversing medical conditions (high blood pressure, etc) can slow the progression of the disease, improving memory, cognition and daily functioning. Learning new mental and physical activities may also be beneficial.
The research on vitamins and antioxidants and specific dietary supplements in the prevention and treatment of dementia is rapidly growing. Dr. Massey has treated a number of patients with dementia and most have had good to excellent responses using intravenous vitamin therapy and select dietary supplements.
ALT-MED Approach:
- Intravenous vitamin therapy
- Regular exercise if possible
- Explore new and novel activities
- Reduce medication use…especially antidepressants and sleep medication
- Select dietary supplements…individualized to the patient
- Lifestyle changes to maximize overall health…healthy people so better

I was one of the many people suffering with back pain plus a herniated disc. The pain was so bad that I could not walk very far or sit for too long. Through "word of mouth" I heard of Dr. Patrick Massey. So I had my daughter make an appointment with the doctor....he recommended some exercises that were tailored for my body (and condition). I highly recommend Dr. Patrick Massey for back pain. Go and see him. What can you lose , only your back pain.
