Conditions - Gastrointestinal
Patrick Massey MD, PhD ALT-MED Medical and Physical Therapy, Elk Grove Village Il and serving the Chicago area
Outside of the brain, the gastrointestinal tract is the most complex organ in the body. Most people look at the gastrointestinal tract as simply a way of getting food and nutrients into the body. Although this is true, gastrointestinal tract plays a much larger role it is vital for your overall health.
Outside of the brain, the gastrointestinal tract has the highest concentration of nerve tissue in the body. Outside of the bone marrow, the highest concentration of immune cells is found in the gastrointestinal tract.
It is in the gastrointestinal tract that toxins are inactivated and nutrients absorbed. The bacteria of the gastrointestinal tract play a significant role in maintaining good health. Good bacteria produce many B vitamins and other compounds that help to regulate the immune system as well as playing a role in preventing heart disease, autoimmune disease and possibly some cancers.
Dr. Massey has had great success with the number of medical conditions related to the gastrointestinal tract, not only with the conditions listed above but also Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis and celiac disease. Dr. Massey appreciates the complexity of the gastrointestinal tract and its overall impact on health.
